A Quick DVR Question

Despite my general obsession with all things technology-related, I've never owned a DVR. Because I'm a DirectTV subscriber, I'm thinking of upgrading to this receiver but am wondering if there's any reason to consider other options like Tivo. I'm especially interested in transferring movies from DVR to DVD but haven't even begun looking into how this is done. Advice?
