    Anticipating TIFF

    Sunday, September 02, 2007

For the first time in four years, I came up on the short end of the TIFF lottery system and, so, will have to do some hustling after I get to Toronto in order to track down three tickets. Because the first four Wavelengths programs were moved this year to the Varsity 7 -- the smallest of the TIFF theaters -- the ticket allotment was dramatically reduced, which left me shut out of the first three screenings. All were among my top 5 or 10 must-see tickets of the fest. Otherwise, I'm amazed by the quality of this year's lineup. And to think that I had to skip films by Alexander Sokurov, Eric Rohmer, Jacques Rivette, Werner Herzog, Todd Haynes, Guy Maddin, . . .

As in past years, I plan to post capsule reviews throughout the festival.
