The Friday Five

Saturday, December 03, 2005  |

Always a day late and a dollar short.

Lately I've been on a mission to fill the gaps in my music collection. A couple times a month I go to the local indie/used record store, spend a few hours browsing, and try to come away with a find or two. My only rules: each disc should be $7.99 or less, and it must, in some sense, qualify as a "classic" album. Tonight's haul: The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan (remastered), Bruce Springsteen's Greetings from Asbury Park, Prince's Purple Rain, and John Coltrane's A Love Supreme (SACD). Not bad for $36.01, including tax. (I broke my price rule by paying $8.99 for the Coltrane SACD.)

The Top Five Most Inexcusable Holes in My Music Collection

  1. The Rolling Stones
  2. The Beach Boys
  3. James Brown
  4. Marvin Gaye
  5. David Bowie

I don't own a single album by any of the above artists. When I was in high school, I had seven or eight Bowie albums on tape, but I never got around to rebuying them. And I know I had What's Going On? at some point, but I'll be damned if I can find it.

Feel free to offer your own lists and/or suggestions for my next trip to Disc Exchange.
